Bedroom Refresh

I’m back after the super long hiatus! My plan is to get back to regularly posting, but maybe 2-3 times a week rather than 5. Thanks for sticking around during the silence. On to the post:

One space that finally feels ‘finished’ is my bedroom! I thought it would be fun to walk you through all the changes over the last two years, from move in day to present.

Designing on a budget means you can’t usually buy everything at once to make over a space, so this has been a two year process of slowly changing, upgrading and re-designing this space and I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Before moving in- empty and ugly rental paint color

New Benjamin Moore Simply white paint- move in day  After unpacking  Changes started… New lamp

New rug

Different bedding, new nightstands. Switched bedroom lamps with living room ones.

Latest and biggest changes!
New bed, removed one night stand, added mirror, de-cluttered the dresser.

If you’re looking to redesign a space and you’re on a budget, I recommend the ‘slow and steady’ approach. While it might not be instant-gratification, the results in the end are worth the wait. Decide what pieces you want to keep and what you want to replace and scour sales (bed and mattress both purchased during big sales), Craigslist (where I scored my dresser and two nightstands) and don’t be afraid to use items from other rooms in your home. These lamps were originally in my living room and I switched them out and it brought a whole new look and feel to the bedroom.

The things I got rid of (tripod floor lamp, desk and chair, black bookshelf, tan rug, old nightstand) I sold on Craigslist and Next Door, so I recouped some money back from those to put toward new purchases. I also have very affordable pieces in here- the mirror is from Ikea, the water lily painting was about $10 at a thrift store and the pillows were on super clearance from target for $6 each (no longer sold, sorry)!                  Get the look: click on the pictures or the links below to shop!

Design Inspiration: The Office (Chic and Modern)

I’m over on The DC Ladies with another Design Inspiration board and post today! This might be one of my favorites. I would totally use every one of these pieces if I ever redesigned my office. It really flips the traditional boring office furniture and stuffy look upside down and that’s why I think I love it so much. Head over to The DC Ladies for the full post and shop each piece below! design-inspiration-the-office-chic-and-modernShop the look:

Balcony Inspiration: Update

I’ve made some progress on the balcony furniture/accessories since my last post, so I thought I’d share a quick update. I found this table and four chairs for a reasonable price on craigslist:

As well as this side table for free on craigslist:IMG_5751 I picked up two of these pillows on sale at World Market:02d946c9d9a6be01296a0d81c3dace3202d946c9d9a6be01296a0d81c3dace32
As much as I love a good Ikea trip, I really didn’t have the time, so thanks to online ordering, I had this small plant, these larger plants and four curtain panels shipped to my door.

I found a fantastic Etsy shop that made custom black and white striped cushions for the chairs above and they are set to arrive this week. I wanted some similar to these (below) in a custom size and fabric and I can’t wait to see them in person! Full post on those coming up next month.

I found a great Pier 1 indoor/outdoor rug on OfferUp and I’m picking it up tonight:

The last furniture item I have left on my list is a love seat or bench.. I’m currently trolling craigslist and found this one which looks to be in great condition (the cushion would be recovered) so hopefully I might be able to score this little beauty. 00V0V_1LO9WKHBKlq_600x450
I’m also currently figuring out a rather complicated solution to installing the curtains on my balcony, which has turned out to be quite challenging, but with a little Home Depot help and a (likely) call to a handyman, I think I’ll be able to make it work. More on that later.

Balcony Inspiration

As you might have noticed in my Apartment Hunting post, I’m looking to find a place with a balcony. And I might have found a winner… stay tuned. If I do move into this particular apartment, the balcony is a pretty decent size but could definitely use some sprucing up. So I’ve been scouring Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. I’ve selected a few of my favorite photos below and then will show you how to get the look (at an affordable price) later on in the post.

Sprucing up:
These deck tiles will be perfect to cover up a not so glamorous floor situation and the light and airy curtains will give it that cabana type vibe I’m going for.

Privacy:
This apartment will likely be a corner unit, which is great, because I’d only have one adjoining wall/balcony rather than two. I’d still like to have a bit of a privacy screen without compromising natural light or space, so this decorative panel seems like a great solution.

Furniture:
I’ve been on a Craigslist spree lately and scored this patio set: bistro table and four chairs for half the price it regularly goes for. I’d like to use my balcony for entertaining, eating and occasionally working on my laptop, so having a table and chairs was a must.

I still need to confirm the exact measurements, but I think a small love seat or  bench will also fit on the balcony. I’d love to find a small, affordable one to incorporate along with a tiny side table or garden stool. I definitely want to make this space an extension of the apartment and basically a second living room.

Decor:
Last but not least, to get the look of my inspiration photos, I want to add a bunch of tall fake plants from Ikea (I’ll never keep real ones alive), a rug, a few throw pillows, and I’m currently searching around on Etsy to see if someone will make small custom black and white cushions for my Craigslist chairs with that gorgeous fabric below.

I’m really excited to have the opportunity to decorate an outdoor space again! I haven’t had one for the last few years and I’m beyond ready for a balcony. Stay tuned for more outdoor posts over the next few weeks and months as I’ll hopefully bring this vision to life.

Favorite Outdoor Furniture and Decor

It’s finally warming up in DC after a long winter, so I decided to pull together a couple of my favorite outdoor furniture pieces and accessories to create stylish and functional living spaces. I haven’t had the luxury of a balcony or patio in my last couple apartments but my building has a lovely rooftop deck that I plan to spend every spare moment on during the warmer months. Wherever I live next, I really hope to find somewhere with a little balcony. It’s so nice to have a second living space outdoors to have a meal, read a book, get a tan or have a cocktail.

Whether you’re furnishing and decorating a small balcony in the city or a large patio or deck in the suburbs, there’s a ton of great options for everyone. My favorite places for stylish, affordable outdoor furniture and accessories are Target and World Market. A couple other sites are noted below as well.
