Year One: Dining Room

Wrapping up this week with the next area of the apartment for the Year One series… the dining room! Next week, I’ll cover the kitchen and the bedroom/office area.

The dining area stayed mostly the same for the majority of my time in the apartment, but with a few decor updates, different table runners, etc, I updated the dining table every couple months for a fresh look.

Starting off with this lovely line up from move in day:2014-08-16 10.37.43 I had the bar set up over by the window for about one day and hated it:2014-08-16 17.52.24  Night progress after moving in. And notice the tacky crystals on the light fixture. My mom and I took those off the next day and lowered the light so it wasn’t so awkwardly close to the ceiling. 2014-08-16 20.39.52  Art added along with the lovely fall foliage outside and on my dining table:2014-11-09 14.29.40  Winter setup: new table runner, West Elm salt and pepper shakers added to the mix (and the sad barren trees outside):2015-01-25 13.10.01 2015-03-15 12.35.49 Many more table runner and centerpiece switches over the next few months: 2015-03-15 14.11.16 2015-03-15 14.07.29 Added a couple vintage and thrift finds to the window ledge:IMG_5168 IMG_5166 IMG_5170And then I completely redid this space over the last few weeks and it’s drastically different! cIIoq_TjfkbTpbdrzPBR5L56kQ8zNb8d5emKbcyJovM M5XfLi5Igsgi_2ZvAx2OmOMf0uDzEEte-qVO0k_9EbM 8OLggKv-2-a3GqO5QGjyhn5TSTqOvzvi2HzlR7TaTck F9_4hWXCC4gogSkTKnJSuru4oFxk2NxE-lT0d2kgn2o 0HUmnlmlrqXUBgY0EFnQopZTuv-VkXnjUJIPBEPxbiEI think this setup will look even better in my next apartment and it might eventually need a rug underneath… but I love how this space evolved in small ways over the year. Along with the not-so-subtle furniture switch that I can enjoy for the last few weeks of living in this apartment (and many more years to come)!

Have a great weekend and I’ll be back on Monday for more Year One progress.

If you missed the first post, check out all of the before photos and project list here:
Project KC: Before

We had all of the trim and wood paneling painted white in the living room and stained the ceiling beams darker. Check out the progress updates below and stay tuned for many more in the coming weeks.

Here’s a look at the before:IMG_5310

Project KC: Before

My family recently did a major interior upgrade and I helped with many of the design aspects of these projects (with lots of phone calls, texts and face-timing remotely from DC) so I thought I’d share a few stages of the overall process. Over the next couple weeks, I’ll go through each space and the decision-making process, post progress photos, etc. Starting off with the master project list. Every item on the list is currently finished with the exception of the dining room, but my mom and I have chronicled every stage, so I’ll start with the before photos and a full list of updates and renovations for the home.

Project List:

  • Replace blue carpet with a taupe color in living room, on staircase, all of upper floor
  • Stain ceiling beams darker in living room
  • Paint wood paneling white in living room
  • Paint window and door frame trim white in living room
  • Resurface and re-stain wood floors in kitchen, dining room, hallways, laundry and bathroom
  • Stain door frames and trim in kitchen to match wood floors
  • Replace appliances in kitchen so they all match
  • Repaint laundry room
  • Stain and paint stair railings in a contrast dark stain with white spindles
  • Paint dining room grey and white

*Many of these photos are right before painting/carpeting/sanding etc started so there’s a noticeable lack of furniture, sheets covering things, etc.

The dining room before: Worn out wooden floors, dated paint colors. IMG_5321 Hallway/entryway before: Worn out floors from high-traffic area, blue carpeting on stairs, dated orange tinted stain on the stair railing and spindles IMG_5322 Kitchen:   Worn out floors, mismatched appliances, trim and wood floors don’t match well with darker stain on the kitchen cabinetsIMG_5325 IMG_5326 That’s a wrap on the before photos, so stay tuned over the next couple weeks for progress posts and the full reveal!

New Living Room Accent Chairs!

As much as I loved my medallion slipper chairs from Target, I started to grow tired of the pattern and they clashed a bit with my new rug. So I was passively looking for an affordable solution to change or replace them. Thanks to my lovely little apartment building listserv, I noticed that a pair of gorgeous accent chairs were up for sale a few floors down from me…2015-03-15 12.59.11

I scored them for $150 for the pair- less than what I paid for just one of my Target chairs a couple years ago! I couldn’t pass up the deal, so I bought the new chairs and decided to list my current ones for sale. They sold quickly and went to live another great life in two different apartments. Everyone wins!

Here’s a few photos of the new chairs in my apartment. I think they fit in quite nicely. 2015-04-05 12.46.52 2015-04-05 12.46.56  2015-04-05 12.47.42 2015-04-05 12.48.052015-04-05 12.50.44

I also sold the grey throw pillow that used to live on one of the accent chairs, so I’ve transferred one of my throw pillows from the sofa to this accent chair in the meantime. I’m in search of an accent pillow for this chair at the moment. 2015-04-05 12.48.22 2015-04-05 12.48.26 2015-04-05 12.49.03

New Living Room Rug Reveal

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I recently ordered this rug (on sale!) from Target. It finally arrived and I’m so thrilled with the new look. The rug looks fantastic with my current furniture and decor and was a great little refresh for my apartment.

Here are a couple before shots with the old rug:

After a bit of shifting and measuring, I put it slightly back under the front legs of my sofa (as I did with the old rug) and added the coffee table back on top:2015-02-23 16.43.53

Completed new look! I love it:2015-02-23 16.49.09 2015-02-23 16.49.18   2015-02-23 16.49.49 2015-02-23 16.50.13 2015-02-23 16.50.27 2015-02-23 16.50.36

Studio Apartment Living Room Transformation

One of my close friends (who also has a studio apartment) recently got a major couch upgrade and I had to share! Her old Ikea couch was too small for the space so we scoured through CB2 to find the perfect replacement. Enter: the Ditto Grey Sectional. It works with her existing furniture, plays well with the color scheme and is much more size-appropriate for the space. And best of all: it’s gorgeous! Before and after photos below.

With a few new throw pillows, this look will be complete! I had a great time helping pick out the couch and a couple other pieces of furniture for her space.
