Project KC: Living Room Progress Part Two

This is the last of the ‘progress’ updates on Project KC, so stay tuned for the full reveal photos of each space coming up soon! In the last living room progress post, I covered updates on staining the ceiling beams and painting the wood paneling white. IMG_5314IMG_5318

I also found a couple more shots from many years ago of the living room before several other updates:
-Mantel painted black, wallpaper taken off and drywall painted, and had most of the furniture replaced. Here’s a look at the space in 2011:

The icky wallpaper is still visible in the photo below, along with the over-sized sectional, tv and other older furniture:Hixn1naSGqgbnXXow-37hsMoKcxguGOd-Bq0m_eiNzE fsh1PTXlP1yY_UI2yKt1G-9DXlrqnRdjD0c_iuq4vd4After the 2011 renovation and new furniture updates, here’s a look at the transformation:IMG_4521IMG_4535IMG_5319Much better but this last update in 2015 really took the space to the next level. Old blue carpet gone, orange panels, windows and trim painted white, and ceiling beams stained.

This already shows the drastic improvement from the white panels and darker ceiling. Right after the blue carpet went to the trash and before the new carpet was installed:IMG_9010Installation progress:IMG_9009Here’s a peek at the new living room! I think this space might be my favorite transformation out of the entire house. Can’t wait to share the full space soon! IMG_9005IMG_8997

Year One: Bedroom/Office Area

Last but not least in the Year One series for this apartment… the bedroom/office area of my studio! This area changed a bit with a few new pieces, and switching out art and accessories over the last year.

Year One: Kitchen

If you missed any posts from last week, check out the Year One series where I covered the entryway, living and dining areas. Moving on to the kitchen! This probably looks the most similar to move in day but I’ve made quite a few subtle changes in this small space.

Here’s a look at the empty kitchen when I first viewed this apartment:2014-08-15 17.23.25 Surrounded with moving boxes:2014-08-16 09.43.39 Putting a few things away in the cabinets on moving day. Check back tomorrow for the last post in the Year One series.. the bedroom/office area.

Year One: Dining Room

Wrapping up this week with the next area of the apartment for the Year One series… the dining room! Next week, I’ll cover the kitchen and the bedroom/office area.

The dining area stayed mostly the same for the majority of my time in the apartment, but with a few decor updates, different table runners, etc, I updated the dining table every couple months for a fresh look.

Starting off with this lovely line up from move in day:2014-08-16 10.37.43 I had the bar set up over by the window for about one day and hated it:2014-08-16 17.52.24  Night progress after moving in. And notice the tacky crystals on the light fixture. My mom and I took those off the next day and lowered the light so it wasn’t so awkwardly close to the ceiling. 2014-08-16 20.39.52  Art added along with the lovely fall foliage outside and on my dining table:2014-11-09 14.29.40  Winter setup: new table runner, West Elm salt and pepper shakers added to the mix (and the sad barren trees outside):2015-01-25 13.10.01 2015-03-15 12.35.49 Many more table runner and centerpiece switches over the next few months: 2015-03-15 14.11.16 2015-03-15 14.07.29 Added a couple vintage and thrift finds to the window ledge:IMG_5168 IMG_5166 IMG_5170And then I completely redid this space over the last few weeks and it’s drastically different! cIIoq_TjfkbTpbdrzPBR5L56kQ8zNb8d5emKbcyJovM M5XfLi5Igsgi_2ZvAx2OmOMf0uDzEEte-qVO0k_9EbM 8OLggKv-2-a3GqO5QGjyhn5TSTqOvzvi2HzlR7TaTck F9_4hWXCC4gogSkTKnJSuru4oFxk2NxE-lT0d2kgn2o 0HUmnlmlrqXUBgY0EFnQopZTuv-VkXnjUJIPBEPxbiEI think this setup will look even better in my next apartment and it might eventually need a rug underneath… but I love how this space evolved in small ways over the year. Along with the not-so-subtle furniture switch that I can enjoy for the last few weeks of living in this apartment (and many more years to come)!

Have a great weekend and I’ll be back on Monday for more Year One progress.

Kitchen Upgrade: New Runner

I’ve had my lovely little striped runner for several years now and it’s seen better days. The various spills and stains don’t quite show up in photos, but in person, this rug is a hot mess. Pictured below is the back side of the rug; I had to flip it over a year ago because the stains and wear on the front side were even worse. I do love the pattern, but a rug with a ton of white probably isn’t the best choice for a kitchen. Anyway, it served its purpose and was really cheap on clearance at West Elm several years ago, so I definitely got my money’s worth out of it.

2015-03-28 18.15.16 2015-03-28 18.15.23 2015-03-28 18.15.39

Enter: my new, gorgeous (darker) replacement rug! I’ve been eyeing this Kilim rug for years and it finally went on sale a couple months ago but was back ordered until last week! So after a long wait, it finally arrived and is the perfect addition to my little kitchen. The quality of the fabric is much higher than the last rug and the darker base and beige pattern will hopefully be a better choice for the high-traffic area… I’m also making a conscious effort to not spill an entire salad on this rug 🙂 2015-05-10 19.13.20 2015-05-10 19.13.21 2015-05-10 19.13.41 2015-05-10 19.13.42

I love how it pairs well with the brass hardware. Can’t resist a black + white + brass combo. 2015-05-10 19.13.51 2015-05-10 19.14.02   And it works just as well with the stainless steel appliances. 2015-05-10 19.14.44 2015-05-10 19.14.49I’m so glad I finally made the switch, it was definitely worth the wait!
