2017 Gift Guide: Small Businesses and Women-Owned Businesses

This holiday season, I wanted to mix things up a bit. I’ll be sharing a few more gift guides over the next couple weeks but for today, I wanted to highlight some amazing small businesses and especially some women-owned businesses! There’s so many wonderful women I follow on Instagram who are making, sourcing and selling amazing things. I also reached out to my followers and they had some great suggestions too. I didn’t have room to include every single one, but if you’d like to check out some additional recommendations, they’re in the comments of this instagram post.

I’ll be purchasing (or have already purchased) a lot of Christmas gifts from these shops this year and I hope you do, too! Favorite picks are highlighted and the full list is sorted by category. Happy shopping!!

The Perfect Gift: Framebridge

Obviously we’re post-holidays (and I desperately need to take down my dying tree) but I wanted to share a Christmas present that I gave my parents and this gift idea would work for any birthday, anniversary, special occasion or holiday.

My parents are die-hard Royals fans and Kansas City natives so I wanted to get a commemorative piece for them for Christmas. I found this gorgeous photograph on Etsy and knew I wanted it framed and matted. In the past, I’ve ordered frames from craft stores and Ikea has a pretty good selection, but the cheaper frames don’t always hold up well. I wanted something nicer that would look great for years to come.

Enter: Framebridge. I’ve heard a lot about the service but hadn’t tried it yet. They reached out to me to use their service on a trial order, so I knew this would be the perfect fit. I’ll walk you through the process:

  • Upload your photo or art to the site
  • Choose the size of frame and matting you want
  • Choose the type and color of frame you want
  • Fill out your preferred method to send it in- they give you a free shipping label (and package if you need it).
  • You’re done!

Here’s a look at the process of choosing frames. I love that you can see exactly how it will look, the sizing and scale, mat, etc. These were among my top favorites: fb2 fb3 fb1I ended up selecting the Mercer frame with a white mat including a black core. The extra little core within the mat makes the photograph really pop and looks so elegant in person.

FB4The greatest part of the story was on Christmas morning as we were about to open our gifts, we were talking about the Royals and my dad said, completely unaware of my gift, “I wish we bought one of those photographs showing the crowd and the skyline for the Royals world series celebration parade…. that would be really nice” And I had a small freak out internally because… that’s exactly the gift I got for them! So needless to say when they opened it, my parents were both shocked and extremely happy. I always love giving gifts but this one in particular was so fun.

Here are a couple shots of the framed photo in person! It turned out beautifully and looks perfect over the piano in my parents’ living room.IMG_0681

If you’re looking for the perfect gift, head over to Framebridge! The process was so quick and easy and I love the end product. And their prices are really affordable for quality, customized framing.

Framebridge provided me with a complimentary trial for one frame but all opinions, reviews and tips are my own. If you’re interested in sponsoring a post or advertising, please contact me here

Fall Round Up: Throw Pillows

Happy October! Now with the cooler weather, I’m finally  feeling in the Fall mood and ready to decorate. It’s my favorite season but I just couldn’t bring myself to get into it in early September when it was still 80-90 degrees outside.

I’ll be back with a September recap tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s a round up of some of my favorite throw pillows for Fall. It’s a quick and easy way to update your decor without spending a fortune. These would look great all Fall and Winter long, and come Spring, they can be tucked away in storage and brought out again next Fall. You can shop for each pillow at the end of the post.

Custom Outdoor Cushions for the Balcony

If you remember on my balcony plans posts, I was on the hunt for a resource for custom cushions for my craigslist score outdoor dining set. After a lot of Etsy searching, I found Britta Leigh Designs. She has a huge selection of seat cushions for both indoor and outdoor furniture. I knew I wanted a specific black and white striped fabric so I reached out to see if she could make custom cushions to fit the smaller size of my chairs and use the striped outdoor fabric.

Britta was super helpful and responsive and ordered the fabric I requested and made the most gorgeous custom cushions!

4pUGcG7YPMIaDskMH2Wp0_jsuAr9ZjWVaBC-TZNOGos I actually had her make four cushions for the four chairs, but when I arranged all of the furniture on the balcony, it looked better with three chairs. So the fourth is safely tucked away (along with its cushion) and can easily be pulled out when extra seating is needed. XT2pC3hQtSW1AmmOhNKPA2ekUoEyfOyxK2Mqev0Yxqw
Not only do they look great, they are very comfortable and already quite durable. DC had a huge downpour of rain a couple nights ago and these guys were completely dry by morning. cq64zQ-wH7NT1YFgsVr0l95iwWpPWdAPejsZONo75z4I also requested that she add little tie backs to each cushion so they wouldn’t slide off. They work perfectly and don’t slide around when you sit down and the little bows at the back just make them look even more adorable, in my opinion 🙂GXjOUXMv6U-t5Jcqa908QbPTeFfF10AUPsCKvoedThU If you’re looking for a quality, affordable resource for outdoor or indoor cushions, head over to Britta Leigh Designs! Her shop is full of great items and you can also go the custom route if you have your eye on a specific fabric or unusual size. 2-CrKYOZ3TDD7SrDwTQ5N0KAQUc1_uO6iXQXTx7Ldsk R2V35apjQ3i4JZfLzC_NIroz-L4F0Lbmqv3_o_7E9TEI’ll leave you with one last sneak peek at the curtains on the other side of the balcony. The whole space turned out even better than I imagined and I can’t wait to show you the full balcony reveal next week!  bTJEJNAO33IvUZJT4D-t6JiPeTnD2L0SBnYif3R8ugA

Balcony Inspiration

As you might have noticed in my Apartment Hunting post, I’m looking to find a place with a balcony. And I might have found a winner… stay tuned. If I do move into this particular apartment, the balcony is a pretty decent size but could definitely use some sprucing up. So I’ve been scouring Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. I’ve selected a few of my favorite photos below and then will show you how to get the look (at an affordable price) later on in the post.

Sprucing up:
These deck tiles will be perfect to cover up a not so glamorous floor situation and the light and airy curtains will give it that cabana type vibe I’m going for.

Privacy:
This apartment will likely be a corner unit, which is great, because I’d only have one adjoining wall/balcony rather than two. I’d still like to have a bit of a privacy screen without compromising natural light or space, so this decorative panel seems like a great solution.

Furniture:
I’ve been on a Craigslist spree lately and scored this patio set: bistro table and four chairs for half the price it regularly goes for. I’d like to use my balcony for entertaining, eating and occasionally working on my laptop, so having a table and chairs was a must.

I still need to confirm the exact measurements, but I think a small love seat or  bench will also fit on the balcony. I’d love to find a small, affordable one to incorporate along with a tiny side table or garden stool. I definitely want to make this space an extension of the apartment and basically a second living room.

Decor:
Last but not least, to get the look of my inspiration photos, I want to add a bunch of tall fake plants from Ikea (I’ll never keep real ones alive), a rug, a few throw pillows, and I’m currently searching around on Etsy to see if someone will make small custom black and white cushions for my Craigslist chairs with that gorgeous fabric below.

I’m really excited to have the opportunity to decorate an outdoor space again! I haven’t had one for the last few years and I’m beyond ready for a balcony. Stay tuned for more outdoor posts over the next few weeks and months as I’ll hopefully bring this vision to life.

New Favorite Resource for Kilim Pillows

I recently discovered a wonderful shop on Etsy for quality (and really affordable) turkish kilim pillows while on the hunt for a small pillow for my new accent chair. I wanted something colorful and with a pattern but that wouldn’t overwhelm the size and style of the neutral chair.

Enter: Decolic Kilim Pillows! They have a ton of great options for amazing prices. They ship directly from Turkey but arrive surprisingly quickly, only a couple business days. I chose a 10 x 20 lumbar pillow cover but they have a variety of styles and sizes. I ordered a simple 10 x 20 pillow form on Amazon and I absolutely love the look! A couple photos below:

DIY: Press for Champagne Art

I’ve been obsessed with the Press for Champagne art from Lisa Golightly for a long time and finally decided to make a DIY version inspired by this photo!

I purchased this door bell on Amazon for only $5.882014-11-10 19.29.09

And went to my local Home Goods and found a gold frame for $7.992014-11-11 19.49.06

My first instinct was to do a different version of the original design by using colored paper, so I bought a bunch of different options at Michael’s:

2014-12-01 10.26.25 2014-12-01 10.26.42 2014-12-01 10.27.02 2014-12-01 10.27.17 2014-12-01 10.30.03

2014-12-01 10.33.01

While I loved all of them, it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for and it looked too busy with the frame and lettering, so I decided to return the paper and go for a different route. I also initially recruited my wonderful mom to test out her calligraphy skills while I was home for the holidays and hand write ‘Press for Champagne’ on the paper. We both decided against it in the end and made another trip back to Michaels.

2014-12-30 15.52.29

DIY, round two: Ivory paper (with a subtle sparkle and texture) and stick on letters. Much more of a nod to the original and less room for error. Between the stickers and paper options, the cost was under $10.

My wonderful mom has more refined crafting skills than I do, so she stuck on the letters and centered the button while I supervised 🙂 2014-12-30 16.06.37

Then, we simply put the paper into the frame (without the glass) and used a screwdriver to attach the screws securely to the back of the frame.

2014-12-30 16.11.57 2014-12-30 16.22.18

One flight from KS to DC later, I stuck on a couple 3M velcro strips to the back…  2015-01-15 11.59.37

And the gorgeous finished product is hanging above my bar! 2015-01-15 12.03.58  2015-01-15 12.09.22 2015-01-15 12.09.59   2015-01-15 12.10.36 2015-01-15 12.10.48 2015-01-15 12.15.16

I’m so thrilled with how it turned out and I’m glad I went back to the original design! The project ended up costing between $20-$25 instead of the original price of the Etsy listing at $62. And a huge thank you to my amazing mom for executing my design and ideas!
