Tips for a Budget-Friendly Move

It’s almost moving day and although I’ve done this many times before, I learn new tips and tricks each time. Moving can get quite expensive, but here are a few tips to cut down on cost.

  • Don’t buy boxes-if you ask around, post on a list serve or keep your eye out, you’ll likely be able to get most of your boxes for free. And if you know you’re moving, save your boxes from online shopping. My running total of boxes is 22 at the moment- and I got them all forĀ free!
  • Buy in bulk– I recently stocked up on packing tape and 3m picture hanging strips for the upcoming move- I knew I would need a large quantity of both, so buying in bulk is a great way to save money.
  • Stay organized– I’ve hired movers for a couple hours, but I made sure to call around and get estimates from almost every company in town before making my final decision. And don’t forget to ask about any (hidden) fees they might tack on.
  • Do it yourself– If you don’t have a bunch of large furniture, get a couple friends or family together to help you move. I’ve done this in the past- but now that I have so much large/heavy furniture, it’s not quite feasible anymore. If you can get away with it, you’ll save a couple hundred dollars and you can pay your “helpers” in pizza and wine.

Free boxes and bubble wrap. Ask around at work, in your apartment building, etc.
